James Burton Nichols was born on February 25, 1902 at Danbury, Conn. He did his undergraduate work at Cornell University and received a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in colloid chemistry in 1927. His first project was to construct an ultracentrifuge for the Du Pont Company's fundamental research program.
